dead animal removal

One of the very first signs that you have a wild animal invader in your home, is a bad smell. Sadly, with dead critters, that’s definitely the case – and there are lots of weird and wonderful spots in your home that they can crawl into before dying. As you can probably imagine, this makes it rather hard to get rid of the source of the bad smell and biological hazard. Not for us, though. We are Buffalo Dead ANimal, a team of highly-trained, fully-licensed, and properly trained wild animal removal and control technicians. With full commercial liability insurance, and a full guarantee, it doesn’t matter whether you have a wild animal/dead animal problem on a business or domestic premises; we can handle the lot. Our friendly team members will first locate the dead (or alive) animal, before then removing it in a way that is safe, humane, legal, and respectful. Deceased animals are disposed of in a way that is according to state guidelines. Following that, the area of the property that was once contaminated, with feces, other body fluids, and general moving-around of the animal(s), will be decontaminated, and this includes a full deodorizing service which eradicates all traces of the critter at a biological level. IF this sounds good to you, why not get in touch with us? Our phones are answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and we can offer you both same-day and next-day appointments for those problems that need resolving quickly.

We are experts in dead animal removal, and take our job seriously. When removing dead animals, we do a COMPLETE job — not only do we remove the dead animal from your home or yard, we also decontaminate the area, deodorize it, and dispose of the animal or cremate it. If you aren't sure whether the stench in your house is due to a rotting carcass or another reason, we can sniff it out with our noses from our years of experience. We remove dead raccoons, dead opossums, dead skunks, dead squirrels, dead birds, even dead dogs and cats. We frequently remove dead rodents from inside walls, because poison kills rats and mice, who die in your house. We completely solve your dead animal problem by taking these steps:

  • Sniff out the dead animal if it is somewhere in your home
  • When necessary, for example if the animal is in a wall or under your house, cut a hole to remove the animal
  • Remove the dead animal, safely and completely (and seal the hole if needed)
  • Finish the job by decontaminating and deodorizing your home
  • Properly dispose of the dead animal through incineration or other means
  • Prevent it from happening again by finding out how they got in your house

Dead animal carcass removal is specialty work. Sometimes the job is simple, such as a dead opossum in the yard, in which case we can simply wear our gloves and respirator mask, bag the carcass, and take it away for incineration. Sometimes this is more complex, such as when the dead animal is under a home crawlspace, under a porch or deck or shed. Or if the animal is larger, such as a dog or a deer. The most complex cases are dead animals inside the house. The animal may have died inside the attic, or down in the walls, or the duct work, or any other part of the architecture. You may have a bad smell in your home, and you're not even sure what's causing it. We've removed not just dead animals, but rotting food, bad mold, etc. We specialize in locating the source of the smell, and we very commonly cut a hole in the ceiling or wall to remove the animal. We remove every bit of the carcass, mop up the juices, vacuum the maggots, spray it and wipe it down with disinfectant, cleaner, and we repair the hole we cut. In some cases we use ozone machines to neutralize odor.

Buffalo Dead Animal Tip: A Dead Animal Inside the Air Conditioning Ductwork

Wild animals die in all sorts of places, ranging from the crawlspace to the attic and chimney. Perhaps, the worst place for an animal to die is the air conditioning ductwork. Why? Because your air conditioning or heating system will push the foul smell throughout your home. Turn off your HVAC system, and you might have to deal with the cold or heat, as the case may be. Turn it on, then you have to deal with the strong stench. So, what should you do if there’s a dead animal inside the air conditioning ductwork?

Locate the Carcass
To find the carcass, all you need to do is follow your nose. But first, you need to turn off your HVAC system to stop the circulation of the rotting smell into every corner of your home. After some time, you should notice an odor differential. What this means is that the odor will be more concentrated in some rooms compared to other rooms. Thereafter, using your nose, move from room to room and identify the area of your house where the foul odor is mostly concentrated. Once you identify that room, smell close to each of the vents there. The carcass will be closest to the vent with the foulest odor.

Remove the Carcass
Once you’ve located the carcass, you can either remove it yourself or get a professional involved. If you decide to remove it yourself, then you need to get prepared. First, you need to put on protective wear. This includes a hand glove as well as a long sleeve shirt and trousers to prevent direct contact with the bodily fluids of the carcass. The tools you’re going to need for this removal process includes a screwdriver, flashlight, paper towels, garbage bag, and a disinfectant.

Use the screwdriver to remove the register cover of the suspected vent. Then use the flashlight to look inside to see if you can find the carcass. If you cannot, you may need a telescoping inspection camera to help you look into the twists and turns of the ductwork.

Once you find the carcass, use your gloved hand to pull it out and put it into the garbage bag. If the carcass is out of reach, you can use a bent cloth hanger to pull it nearer. You can also extend a hose to your vacuum cleaner and use the pressure to suck the carcass closer.

If all these fail and you’re unable to reach the carcass, then you need to get a wildlife professional involved. They have all the specialized tools needed to remove carcasses from hard-to-reach spots.

Once you place the carcass in the garbage bag, seal up the bag and immediately dispose of it. Different cities have different rules concerning the disposal of wildlife carcasses. That’s why you need to contact your local wildlife authority so you can dispose of the carcass the right way.

Clean Up the Mess
Now that you’ve removed the carcass from the duct, you have to clean up that area. This is important because the dead body will have attracted lots of pests and bred several bacteria, and all of these pose a serious health risk to you and your family. If the contaminated spot is nearby, use a rag to wipe off the area before bleaching. If the spot is farther, you can make use of a mop to reach it. Disinfecting the area will kill all germs and prevent the growth of dangerous mold and bacteria.

Repairs
If you have a dead animal in your ductwork, then it most likely would have chewed its way there. Damaged ductwork reduces the efficiency of your HVAC system as air leaks out of it. This invariably leads to poor HVAC performance, which will result in higher energy bills. That’s why you need to get in touch with a professional to repair all the damages. You also need to find the entry hole the animal used to gain access to your ductwork so you can seal it up to prevent the reentry of another wild critter.
